THOUSANDS of Islanders downloaded a new track-and-trace app on the day of its launch yesterday.

The Covid Alert app, produced by the government in partnership with Digital Jersey at a cost of £240,000, is designed to alert users when they have been near another app user who has recently tested positive for coronavirus.
By this morning the free app had already been downloaded by more than 15,000 people and had become the sixth most-downloaded medical app on the UK iOS App Store.
Within hours of the app being launched, technical issues meant that it was unable to be downloaded on Android devices. However, those issues were resolved by yesterday afternoon.

Tony Moretta, chief executive of Digital Jersey, said the new app was completely safe, with users not asked for personal info. ‘It is completely anonymous, as only the ID of the device can be tracked, not personal details,’ he said.
Mr Moretta said that as little as 15% take-up within the population would have an impact on the ability to successfully track cases and therefore the spread of the virus, but challenged the Island to ‘break records’ and said he hoped that coverage in excess of 50% could be achieved.
Julian Blazeby, director general for Justice and Home Affairs, said the app did not replace any other measures currently in place, but was an additional service aimed to support the work of the contact tracing team.
‘The government’s strategy to delay, contain and shield aims to protect Islanders, avoid imposing harsh restrictions on the entire community and sustain relatively normal routines.
‘If we can continue to adhere to public-health measures, including signing up for this app, we have a stronger chance to protect those who are vulnerable to Covid in our island.’
Mr Blazeby said the contact tracing team was currently in the middle of a busy spell as a result of a rise in known active cases, and could be expanded in size.
‘We will be looking to increase our numbers, and this could include opportunities for people who may have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic,’ he said.

The app was available throughout yesterday to those with Apple smartphones, who make up an estimated three-quarters of the Island’s smartphone users, with a technical glitch involving Google being ironed out by mid-afternoon, enabling those with Android phones to join up as well.

Dr Ivan Muscat, deputy medical officer of health, said: ‘This app should be used as another layer of protection for Islanders. If as many as possible can download it, it will help us create an even better picture of where Covid cases are and how many people are at risk as a result of having been close to these cases.’
